Learning Environment Approval

Supporting High-Quality Learning Placements Across Lincolnshire
Hosting learners within primary care settings plays a vital role in developing the future workforce, strengthening recruitment pipelines, and creating sustainable, skilled teams across Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire Training Hub works with primary care organisations across the county to support the development of safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environments for healthcare learners.

The Workforce, Training and Education Directorate (WT&E) in NHS England (formerly Health Education England) holds strategic responsibility for the quality assurance and quality management of educators and clinical learning environments. In partnership with the national Primary and Integrated Care team, the WT&E Quality Team continues to enhance and innovate placement approval and quality processes across primary care.

Learning Environment Approval is recognised and endorsed by:

  • Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Health and Care Professions Council
  • General Medical Council
  • Council of Deans of Health

What Is Learning Environment Approval?

Learning Environment Approval (LEA) ensures that organisations providing placements offer safe, supportive, and high-quality learning experiences for students and trainees.

The approval process helps practices and healthcare providers demonstrate their commitment to education, workforce development, and continuous improvement.

Once approved, organisations can host learners from a range of healthcare disciplines including:

  • Nursing
  • Medicine
  • Pharmacy
  • Allied Health Professions
  • Multi-professional primary care pathways

The Six Quality Domains

The application, approval, and ongoing quality monitoring process — including risk-based assessments — is underpinned by the six domains within the NHS WT&E Quality Framework:

  1. Learning environment and culture
  2. Educational governance and commitment to quality
  3. Developing and supporting learners
  4. Developing and supporting supervisors
  5. Delivering programmes and curricula
  6. Developing a sustainable workforce
